This picture clearly portrays the condition of the contaminated water in India, and the quality of their drinking water that is given to people throughout India. It shows the pollution with trash and waste in the water that reaches some of the undeveloped countries.
SUMMARY: It was found by the World Health Organization that
88% of the 1.8 million deaths that occur that are a result of diarrhea is
caused by the quality, and hygiene of the drinking water. The horrible part is
that in places like Hubli, India the population isn’t even aware of why there
are so many sicknesses and deaths among them. The summer of 2008 was to be
spent by the University of South California Hubli Water and Health team trying
to create a plan to improve the conditions of the people impacted by the unsafe
water and to decrease the number of deaths caused by this. From the University
six students will be conducting a guided pilot project in the low developed
area of S.M. Krishna Nagar. The teams goals are to employ close by students
from college to take care of and monitor the accuracy of the water purification
technology. The team plans to provide great purification systems that are not
over peoples budget, trying to create a sense of importance. These six students
also planned to spread the awareness of the water and the importance to drink
purified water. The water source that is provided by the Hubli-Dhaward
Municipal Corporation is said to be filtered, however sewage leaks and poor
management makes the contaminated water reach homes of residents, which means
even if the water looks clean it isn’t safe at all. The USC Hubli Water and
Health Team has main concerns to spread the awareness of the issue of unsafe
drinking water and educate, while providing sustainable improvements as well as
a step toward purifying water in areas around.
OPINION: This issue of water contamination is spread out
throughout countries around the world and it’s absolutely horrible to think
that some populations like in Hubli India, aren’t even aware of the issue and
when they are harmed by the water they think it is caused by something else.
This really scares me because I have relatives that live in India, and it
concerns me to think about the water they may be drinking. Even though they
live in pretty well and high developed parts in India, who knows what can
happen. I think the government really needs to step in and create plans and
ways of fixing this water contamination issues. After reading Jenna’s blog on
prescription drugs contaminating water, I thought certain substances are the
cause of contamination, however here the plain old water is even contaminated
because of the lack of caring. I really hope people start to understand that
they are taking our countries to a point where the next generation and our
children will be scared to drink water and will question what the water will do
to them. I am actually very concerned with this issue now, and hope to learn
soon in class about the water we drink and its impacts so I know how to be more
cautious.\
QUESTIONS
1) Is there any way for our government to provide any equipment or technology that can help countries in India to develop better water purification systems?
2) How many more serious impacts can this contaminated water have on people that can lead them to serious diseases? Why isn’t the government considering this?
3) What places in India have pure clean drinking water that is not harmful to people, and can we use those same techniques used in places with clean water to help out under developed communities advance?
4) Is there any treatment or medication available to cure any diseases caused by unsafe drinking water?

Opinion: I find it so upsetting that in some undeveloped areas of the world, such as some places in India, have to live with unclean, contaminated water. Water is essential to life, and no one should be deprived of it. After reading this article, I thought about our populations lesson. Contaminated water reminds me of a density dependent limiting factor. If diseases are transmitted from the water, than they are more likely to spread with high populations. Also, I agree with Chandni that the government should really consider this issue and try to come up with some solutions. If they currently are trying to fix this problem, I hope they can find a way for clean water to make it to the areas with contaminated water very soon. Hopefully water contamination will come to an end some day!
ReplyDeleteQuestions:
1) What is the water most commonly contaminated with? Is there any way to reduce the input of these contaminants in the water?
2) How long has this issue been around for, and if it has been a while, why has there been no help to these areas with contaminated water?
3) Is there a way to purify water in the homes of these people with a simple purification device? If so, why don’t people living in areas with contaminated water all have one to prevent disease?
Opinion: This article is very sad. I had no idea the effect that contaminated water could have on people. Water is supposed to help you survive, but in this case it is causing death to many people in Hubli, India. This worries me because this could eventually happen in our country. Even though our water is regularly tested and monitored, something could always happen. You never know. We need to be more careful about what we put into our bodies. Something as little as drinking contaminated water could kill you. I am glad to see that students from the University of South Carolina are helping monitor the water condtions in India. I hope that India realizes what the problem is and can fix it. This connects to how we learned how to read our water quality reports in class. These reports show us the level of contaminants in our water. We have to read these reports to make sure that our contaminants do not reach an unsafe level. India should start testing their water and writing these reports too. If Hubli, India does this, then they will be able to figure out what in their water is causing these people to die from unsafe water.

This is a national list of contaminants that are found in water and their MCLs, which is the maximum amount of the contaminant that can be in drinking water. It also states potential health effects from long term exposure if the amount of contaminant is above the MCL. This connects with the article because it shows contaminants that can be found in our water in the U.S. and if there is a large amount of them, they can cause death. Also, many of the effects of long term exposure to these contaminants include diarrhea.
I agree with Chandhi that this is horrible that people in Hubli do not realize the issues and harm they are bring to themselves because they do not have clean water. This problem is even worse than what I wrote about with prescription drugs in America’s drinking water. More people are dying in India than in America and we need to put an end to this major issue. When reading about how University of South Carolina is trying to help this cause I knew that if we help them, we could save many lives. I understand that it will be hard to filter all this water with sewage leaks and poor management but if we all try to give a little, we can help get them one step closer to clean and safe water.
ReplyDeletehttp://vanessavick.com/#/nigeria/200o This website shows a picture of a mother getting water to drink but the water is extremely dirty and not safe for her and her child.
Opinion: I find it very sad that so many people die from such a simple thing in our world, clean water. It just goes to show you how lucky we are to live in America where we take things like clean water for granted. Most of these people in the countries where many are dieing do not even know why they are. Those six students who are going over to help the people of Hubli are so amazing. Also I never knew how many people died from water contaimantion a year. 88 percent is such a huge number, and it is very sad. I can not relate this to anything in my life at the moment, but if this is going on all over the world, I wonder if sooner or later it could happen to American due to careless-ness.

this is another article that talks about the six students that went to help out in Hubli. It was very special and caring of them to go over and help out. I always wish I could do that someday, it seems like such an amazing thing to do. The article talks about what they accomplished over in Hubli

ReplyDeleteOpinion : It sad to find such things like contaminated water sources in some places of India. But let me point it out , it should not be written like " through out people are getting water through such sources." I know, there are issues related to it, but it was the time of 2008 and now its 2012 and in many part of even Rural India, people are getting safe whole some drinking water. Even in India there are various ways to provide pure safe wholesome water at domestic level as well as a large village or city level.Like Rapid and Slow sand water filters, chlorination process of well water before its use etc etc. They are the cheaper sources of water disinfection and to provide good quality of water.I think the team should visit the India again in near future to reassess the situation.I know, still there are many areas where safe water is not available but through out India, its very wrong. Here in India Government is providing good facilities despite limited resources.
ReplyDeleteIt is a sad thing that there are so many areas in the world where such a basic commodity as safe drinking water is unavailable. While I believe the Indian Government does its best with limited resources, it is a great idea for the international community to become involved by working with Indian community leaders to achieve the aim of improving the quality of drinking water and sanitation of local families through education and technology.
